Nylon Rope VS Polyester Rope

Nylon and polyester are both mode up of strong, synthetic materials, making it durable than natural fibre ropes and are suitable for a number of different jobs.

 

NYLON ROPE                                         POLYESTER ROPE

There are three key difference which difference Nylon and Polyester ropes:

  1. Flexibility :

Nylon is more stretchable. It can be stretched by upto 20% if required without affecting its strength as it regains its original size eventually. Thus nylon ropes are preferred choice when the rope needs to be more shock absorbent such as mooring or towing. On the other hand Polyester can only be stretched by upto 10% when put under pressure.

  1. Absorbency :

Nylon and Polyester both absorb water but they greatly differ in terms of the amount of absorption. The moisture regain capacity of Nylon is 4%, whereas that of Polyester is 0.4%. As nylon absorbs water quickly and retains it the strength capability of Nylon is compromised in such situations. It also makes it hard to quickly dry Nylon plus it cannot hold the dye firmly eventually resulting in quick colour fading when exposed to sun rays. In the case of Polyester the strength does not degrade due to water plus the dye binds properly with no effect of the UV radiation. This makes Polyester ropes more suitable for marine application.

  1. Temperature Resistance :

The last and important notable difference between Nylon and Polyester is their resistance to heat. Nylon 6 (In India Nylon 6 is most commonly used) melting point is 220 *C whereas that of Polyester is 265 *C, thus Nylon rope cannot withstand the temperature that Polyester ropes can resulting in earlier degradation at higher temperatures. So Nylon is a better option if the application is at extreme temperatures.
